12 Pack Poems: Bauhaus Brew Labs

Bauhaus Brew Labs is somewhat of a boutique brewery. And they make some unique beer styles.

Bauhaus brew labs

I’m a firm believer that brewing beer is an art form. And so is Bauhaus. In fact, much of the inspiration of Bauhaus comes from art and is named after the Bauhaus art school in Germany.

Here’s their website’s bio:

“Bauhaus Brew Labs is a family of musicians, scientists, artists and – above all – beer lovers, aiming to reinvigorate the spirit of the family brewery. At Bauhaus, we take a unique look at classic German-inspired beer styles, skewed slightly by a sense of play and adventure. Our flavor-forward, sessionable beers are crafted to surprise and delight without taxing the palate.”

While much of their beer leans toward the German style, they do have some interesting takes on more hop-forward beers, like their Midwest Coast IPA, which was my personal favorite.

Anyway, in the name of art and good beer, here are some slurred word poems inspired by their beer.

Wagon Party — 5.4% — California Common

“All kinds of people made the wagon trip into the Wild West: bankers from Boston, carpenters from Ohio, even brewers from Bavaria. After fording rivers and not dying of cholera or exhaustion, these brave folks would have enjoyed a tasty beer at the end of the trail. Fermented with lager yeast at higher ale temperatures, this beer is an homage to an American beer style that emerged during the California Gold Rush. Its firm, grainy maltiness and hoppy aromas of tangerine, apricot and citrus will make you want to party like it’s 1849.”

It’s heavy on maltiness. Extremely so. With big notes of caramel, toffee, and bready/doughy flavor. But it brings a familiar west coast bitterness of piney/floral hops, along with citrus rind – and surprisingly a strong apricot juiciness. It’s like halfway between a brown ale and apa. And leans toward the heavier side of things, almost a meal in itself.

‘Knuckle-size flies thick black and buzzing in the sun
dirt earth and dust each breath in
Dry mouthed and an endless horizon
There’s no way the west would have been won
If it weren’t for California commons and cold ones.’

Star Grazer — 5.0% — Schwarzbier

“If you’ve never time-traveled, then take it from us – Stargrazer will be your personal slingshot through time and space. Our Schwarzbier is a jet-black mystery, delivering a surprisingly light body and bright hop profile without the heavy roast qualities you find in most dark beers. It’s as black as the night sky, yet amazingly refreshing and smooth.”

It’s as dark as coca-cola but doesn’t taste as thick as something like a porter or stout. It does share similar roasted malt qualities like them, but it’s lighter body and strong hoppy finish really set it apart. It’s really similar to a black IPA, but with more balance between malt and hops.

‘Finding stories in the stars
out of constellations
in a sea of stout
It’s not in despair we float
instead we are what’s human
and sing songs of dreams and hope.’

Wonderstuff — 5.4% — Pilsner

“Some ideas are simply ahead of their time. The stuff in this can, however, is right on schedule. We channeled a madman’s spirit and wild ingenuity to create this truly unique version of a classic. Wonderstuff delivers the clean, balanced flavors you’d expect from a Bohemian Style Pilsner, but with a powerful, citrus hop twist.”

Well shit. It tastes exactly as they call it. It has the classic profile of a pilsner, with a crisp, light crackery malt forward taste, but it flows into a complex juicy hopped fruit flavor that blends notes of citrus bitters and tropical, juicy fruit. It’s amazing and refreshing.

‘My greatest dream is to create something
that captures the zeitgeist, to create art that just might
express a modicum of meaning, of what it’s like to
be a human being believing.’

Skyfive — 6.7% — IPA

“A high-five just won’t cut it when this ambrosial concoction of hop goodness hits your lips. Hell, even a cartwheel wouldn’t be enough. Generous late hop additions provide loads of hop flavor, with just enough bitterness to ignite your senses and make your wilder dreams come true. Notes of citrus, passionfruit and spice are supported by German and British malts, building a full-flavored yet balanced IPA. ”

It reminds me of Moon Man from New Glarus. But just a bit. It has a sweet, pale malt background with refreshing fruit flavors. I get notes of citrus, grapefruit, pineapple and a mild bitter grassy/floral hop finish. It’s a solid must-try IPA.

‘My Midwest memories include
glacier lakes and hot air balloons
clouds cut contrast to a denim blue
corn country where at night the lights
come alive
both as Ferris wheel fairs festivals
and as fireflies.’
