Boxcar Benny Review: Great Dane’s Eggs Benedict

The Great Dane has some great food.

Great Dane Eggs Benny

Their eggs benny was not one of them. I can even sum up this benny review with a gif:

I wanted to like Great Dane’s Eggs Benedict. I really did. They were the first place I ever ate at in Madison. It’s always a safe bet. And their French onion soup is the best hangover cure I’ve had to date. The Great Dane is an important part of Madison. It’s like our own TGI Fridays with a local twist.

Here’s what the menu said: “Two poached egg served with Canadian bacon on a toasted English muffin and topped with hollandaise sauce. Served with cheesy hash browns and a fresh fruit garnish.” Sounds like a classic eggs benny right?

But man, oh man. Let’s just get on with the review.

Hollandaise: 2/5

You know how when you go to squeeze mustard from the bottle, and that pale, faintly yellow watery discharge comes out? That was this hollandaise.

Eggs: 2/5

They were eggs. And they were poached. That’s about all you can ask for. But they had that boiled water taste, unseasoned, and just felt unloved.

Eggs Yucky

Meat: 4/5

Let’s look at the positives. The meat was good. It was a nice, thick cut of ham, seared and savory.

Muffin: 1/5

Man. The muffin should be the easy part. But this English muffin was somehow both burnt and chewy. It tasted like I was chewing on a rubber tire.

Once wasn’t enough. I was doubly disappointed.

Side: 4/5

Another saving grace. The cheesy hash browns were delicious. It was a 50/50 ratio of cheese to hash browns here. The only downside was there wasn’t enough.

Cheesy Hashbrowns
I should have just ordered a plate of these.

Overall: 13

Ouch. Ok. I may have been a little harsh. So I want to reiterate the positives. The hash browns were a really great side and the meat is exactly what you want in a classic eggs benny. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to carry the meal, and the eggs benny scores as our lowest yet, replacing Oliver’s as the lowest in our search for the best eggs benedict.

But don’t be discouraged. The Great Dane has a great menu that specializes in Wisconsin-style food, and they have some really great meals. When you’re here and hungover, however, I’d steer clear of the benny and opt for the French onion soup instead.
