Lakefront Brewery’s Hoppy Box of Beer

Lakefront was one of the first breweries I remember visiting.

And they’ve also easily become one of my favorites. I’ve been meaning to try their Hoppy Box of Beer, which features a few flagships along with some experimental beers. So here are some words inspired by the beer.

Denali SHOP – 7.0% – IPA

A nice single hop series that showcases the Denali hop. Lakefront describes Denali as an IPA with notes of “pineapple, lemon, and nectarine flavors from the brand-new Denali™ hops.”

It seems everyone is taking a shot with the Denali hop lately. I definitely enjoyed this a bit more than the Denali Hero from Revolution. It’s a bitter, bitter beer, but balanced with tropical fruit notes, lemon zest, and somewhat of a spicy hop note.

‘Life’s a mountain
stay at the peak
as long as you can
savor it before
the fall back down
again.’

Fixed Gear – 6.8% – Red IPA

Fixed Gear is a classic. It’s a nice balance between earthy and piney hops, along with a toasted caramel sweet malt background. It definitely seems like they have changed up their recipe a bit. This Fixed Gear is noticeable more spiced, like a clove and coriander vibe, than I remember.

‘I’ve never had luck with
bikes
my first stolen by a thief
of the night

as for the second
a bit bizarre
as someone hit me
with their car.’

Lakefront IPA – 6.6%

Another flagship on the list. Their IPA is the epitome of the style. It’s floral hopped, with a nice balance of malt. It’s definitely one of the best IPAs I’ve had. No frills, but just good old fashion bitterness.

‘In the sky
a dy-
ing rose hangs over the world
a decaying god unfurls
petals fall rain drops
the sad eye of the all knowing cyclops.’

Tiny Feet – 8.8% – DIPA

Let’s see. Here’s what Lakefront says. “Centennial and El Dorado hops give Tiny Feet loads of tangerine, lemon, mango and pineapple aromas, while malted rye adds a distinct grainy, slightly spicy flavor. Get it before this bird flies the coop!”

Hm. The hops have a noticeable piney note, alongside a juicer, tropical flavor. Then the rye comes in with a spicy kick. It has somewhat of a dry finish. It’s definitely a solid DIPA, and a must try if you like doubles, but are tired of the resiny, super heavy ones.

‘Watch out
tiny feet!
insomnia
count black sheep
and you’ll die in
your sleep.’
