Red Beans & Rice Cajun Burger

More bean burgers! This recipe puts a new spin on the classic comfort food staple.

If you haven’t noticed, I really love bean burgers. Check out my other bean burger recipes below.

It’s my (one of many) pipe dreams to get some seed money and start a restaurant/bar called beans&beer. And you guessed it, besides serving a giant tap list of craft beer, I would offer an ever-expanding menu of boutique and regional flavored favorite bean burgers.

The recipe takes classic red beans and rice – a creole classic – and turns it into a hamburger style dinner. You can dress your burger in your preferred way, but I highly recommend adding the cajun aioli sauce, as it just ties everything together so well. For mine, I used the classic ketchup mustard toppings, along with pickles, onion slices, and a slice of smoked cheddar cheese.

Time You Need

  • Prep: ~30 minutes
  • Cooking ~20-25 minutes
  • Yields: 4-6 patties

What You Need

For the patties:

  • 1 cup cooked brown rice
  • 1 (15 ounce) can red kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 small onion, chopped (white or yellow)
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tbsp Cajun seasoning
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • ½ cup seasoned breadcrumbs

Cajun sauce:

  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • ½ tbsp cajun seasoning
  • 1 tbsp hot sauce
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

What You Do

  • Preheat oven to 350.
  • In a mixing bowl, mash red beans to form a paste.
  • In a skillet, over medium heat, add olive oil and cook onions and garlic for about five minutes. Add garlic, onions, cooked rice, beaten egg, and remaining ingredients to the bean paste and mix by hand.
  • If mixture feels too wet to shape, gradually add more breadcrumbs.
  • Form about 4-6 large patties. Place on greased baking sheet, and cook for about 20 minutes, making sure to flip burgers halfway through.
  • For the cajun sauce:
  • In a small bowl, add ingredients and mix thoroughly. Pour over the top of the burgers and enjoy!
