With Revolution’s latest League, two new cold weather heroes show up to help me brave the dreary doldrums of winter.
(Here are the past installments of Volume I and Volume II and the slurred word poems they inspired.)
I could go on forever about how much I love the whole League of Heroes concept. And the fact that there are actual comic books about these super heroes beers makes them that much more enjoyable.
Anyway, winter weather is in full swing. The sunlit hours are short. The weather is brutal, leaving us with dry hands and dead car batteries – and the cold winter has me wanting nothing more than to just hole up in a bar.
Yep. It’s the most wonderful time of the year. In dreary, dark winter days, I looked to Rev’s heroes for hope. Which became the central theme of these drunk poems I penned.
Galaxy Hero – 7%
Galaxy Hero makes his return. It’s a crisp IPA that has strong hits of tropical fruit and tart citrus, some spicy hops, and a tiny amount of malty sweetness.
‘When your dreams
seem drowned
your luck down,
throw your eyes
toward the star packed sky
see the beauty
the holy hero galaxy.’
Anti-Hero – 6.5%
Anti-Hero is the OG hero. The IPA is well balanced with bitter hop flavor and a somewhat sweet, toasted grainy flavor.
‘It started with Huck Finn
Kerouac knew him
called him the American
Eastwood played him
In those spaghettis he was in
Noble in his own
way, gets the job done
like cold beer on a hellish day
a hero but anti-
bold but bitter vigilante.’
Northwest Hero – 7.1%
Northwest is one of the new heroes in the League. According to Revolution, it’s packed with 5 variety of hops – Columbus, Chinook, Centennial, Cascade and Warrior – all of which give it a super dank aroma. As for taste, I would sum it up as piney. It has that strong pine tree/resiny taste, with some floral hops as well that’s balanced by an earthy and somewhat sweet malt backbone.
‘I walked up
snowy mountains,
found the holy
ghost.
the backdrops auroras
it was there I found
hope.’
Denali Hero – 7.5%
Denali is the other hero to make a debut. Revolution describes it as a beer dry-hopped with “Denali hops to deliver a serious punch of pineapple, citrus and herbal notes with every sip.”
I tasted that strong, riney, citrus zest along with some nice juicier fruit notes, and oddly enough, some subtle spicy hop notes. The malts weren’t as rich in sweetness as the Northwest hero, but they were noticeable and helped balance the bitter.
‘It’s like that old
paradise quote,
climb that goddamn mountain,
go forth
he spoke.’
