12 Pack Poems: Sierra Nevada Fall Pack (2018)

More sweater weather beer and slurred word poetry.

Sierra Nevada Fall Pack

Sierra Nevada is great with their variety packs and perfectly pair their beers with the changing seasons. Their 2018 Fall Pack comes with four perfect beers for sipping around a campfire on a cold autumn evening.

Tumbler — 5.5% — Brown Ale

“Tumbler is our take on the classic brown ale – full of roasted malt flavor but delicate on the palate and perfect for crisp fall days. Layered with notes of chocolate and toasted bread and a hint of smoke, Tumbler is the ultimate autumn beer, so grab a seat and watch as the leaves come tumbling down.”

Lots and lots of sweet caramel, toffee, and bready malts, with just a hint of a smoky finish. It’s like the perfect essence of fall.

‘Campfire embers fade to barely a glow
a barn owl somewhere howls to let you know
finish your sip, you’ve always had a brown ale soul
the night is here it’s time to go.’

Vienna Lager — 5.3% — Lager

“These delicate and extremely balanced amber beers rely on semi-sweet and bready malt flavors but walk a fine line with both malt and hop character shouldering equal weight. Our take on the style features whole-cone European hops, which add to the dry finish.”

This is one of my personal favorites. It has a very lightly sweet, pale malt background, that’s balanced by floral and spicy hops. It’s one of my favorite hoppy lagers.

‘A lager on a patio
someday afternoon could be anywhere
the sun hits just right as the sounds play the songs of city life
birds dot the white sky like black pepper spice
Fall feels good when there’s beer involved.’

Torpedo — 7.2% — DIPA

“What began as a crazy idea scribbled in a pub eventually became our newest year-round hop bomb, Torpedo Extra IPA. The first beer to feature our “Hop Torpedo”—a revolutionary dry-hopping device that controls how much hop aroma is imparted into beer without adding additional bitterness. Torpedo Extra IPA is an aggressive yet balanced beer with massive hop aromas of citrus, pine, and tropical fruit.”

It’s like a classic IPA — enhanced. It’s extremely bitter, with strong notes of pine, resin, and floral/fruit hops, with a subtle bready/biscuity malt background to help balance it all out.

‘we were the lost boys of illinois playing the dead lands of old YMCA camps
summers like a pop song on the radio drinking Torpedos cooled by the rock rivers flow
it’s a simple time and place that I called home.’

Ruthless Rye —6.6% — IPA

“Rugged and resilient, rye has been a staple grain for ages and its spicy black pepper-like flavor has been prized by distillers and brewers for centuries. Rye thrives in the harshest conditions and comes to life in Ruthless, a rugged IPA with fruity, citrus and herbal hop notes countered by the dry spiciness of the rye. ”

A floral IPA with lots of spice and fruitiness from the rye. But really the spice stands out, especially at the end, with its strong, peppery, grainy finish.

‘Ruthless Rye
fits just right

in the fall
type

spice of the season
I wonder how it’d be
mixed with whiskey
just like the song they
sing.’
