Sloppy Jacobs II: Jalapeno Boogaloo

More sloppy joe style goodness.

sloppy jacobs 2

Here we go. I took the concept behind my Sloppy Jacob and combined it with my favorite flavor profile the jalapeno popper.

I present to you the Sloppy Jacob II – jalapeno boogaloo. Instead of ground beef (or pork), I went with bird. The recipe calls for a blend of ground chicken and turkey, along with hearty amounts of jalapeno and cream cheese to create a loose sandwich fit for the dirtiest of dive bars. It’s beautiful. And it joins my ever-growing list of jalapeno popper inspired foods (at this rate, I could open a restaurant with a menu that only serves jalapeno popper recipes).

  • Yields: ~5-6 sloppy jacobs

What You Need

  • 1 pound of ground chicken
  • .5 pound of ground turkey
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 yellow onion, diced
  • 1/2 tbsp dijon mustard
  • 3 cloves minced garlic
  • ½ cup chicken broth
  • ½ cup milk
  • ~1 tbsp flour
  • 4 ounces of room temp cream cheese
  • ~1-2 cups diced jalapeno (depending on desired heat level)
  • 1/2 tbsp cayenne powder
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • Salt, pepper to taste
  • 1 tbsp onion powder
  • Hamburger buns of choice, for serving
  • Slices of pepper jack cheese or sharp cheddar, for serving

What You Do

  • Heat a well-oiled large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground chicken and turkey, breaking the meat up as you stir. Then add salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, cayenne pepper.
  • Cook meat until browned (about 10 or so minutes). Then add chicken broth, onion, jalapeno peppers, and garlic.
  • Reduce heat and let simmer for about 5 minutes till onions are cooked.
  • Then mix in cream cheese, milk, mustard and Worcestershire sauce. Reduce heat to a low simmer and cook for another 10-15 minutes, continually stirring until cream cheese is thoroughly melted into a sauce. Add flour as necessary to thicken. After about 10 or 15 minutes, reduce heat and let cool a bit before serving.
  • Pour hearty helpings over hamburger buns, and serve with a slice of cheese (and *optional* pickles).
