Summit Boundary Waters (2018)

Summit revamped their lineup for this year’s Boundary Waters 12 Pack — just in time for summer.

You wouldn’t think it possible, but they went and made this pack even more summery. It features a returning hefeweizen, as well as three new beers in the lineup: a wit bier, a blonde ale, and a fruit beer.

And the result is a perfect camping/beach case of beer. I can’t wait for summer. Seriously. Opening up this pack was like opening up a box of sunshine. Cold, sunshiny, summery beer.

This is also the pack I took with me to camp out in line for ten hours for the Great Taste of the Midwest tickets. Yay for more beer!

Skip Rock – 4.5% – Witbier

“Brewed with tangerine peel from California and New Mexico, the beer’s fruit profile gets a boost of orange and floral notes from fresh-ground coriander. In the end, these ingredients offer the best of both worlds: Balanced flavors and aromas of zesty citrus and spice, and zero sour citrus pulp.”

Yep. Citrus and spice. It’s a crisp, refreshing beer with a bite of clove & coriander, and then that bitter, zesty orange rind flavor. Definitely a solid summertime beer.

Lazy Sipper – 4.8% – Blonde Ale

“A refreshing blonde ale homegrown in Minnesota with all local hops, malts and strawberries, Summit Lazy Sipper features malt-derived notes of light toast, breadcrumb and graham cracker, plus gentle hop characteristics of lemon, green tea and grapefruit. Balanced by a hint of fresh strawberry in the finish and aroma, Lazy Sipper celebrates the contributions of Minnesota’s researchers and growers, encouraging you to dive headfirst into this carefree northern summer.”

The only thing I wanted with this was more prominent strawberry flavor. Other than that though, this beer was delicious. You get a nice, desert breadiness, like a sweet vanilla cake flavor of malt. Then the lemon and bitter fruit notes to balance it out.

Golden Fruited – 4.8% – Fruit Ale

“Featuring aromas of passionfruit and mango from 100 percent Galaxy hops from Australia, plus notes of toast and bread from US, UK and Argentinian malts, Summit Golden Fruited is balanced by a hint of fresh peach and apricot.”

What I love about the Golden Fruited, is that it’s a ripe, fruit-rich beer but not at all in a gimmicky, unnatural way. You can taste the juicy peach and apricot flavors that get mellowed a bit by the dry, floral galaxy hop. And it’s balanced by a caramel sweet malt back end. Woo-ee I feel like this can could grow on trees.

‘Behold

Hefeweizen – 4.9%

First off. I love the beer’s motto. “Go ahead, Hefanother.”

Summit’s Hefe is the only returning beer from last year’s boundary water pack (link). They describe it as:
“Party like old times with the toasted breadcrumb base, and say “guten Tag” to a little Tettnang hop spice. Sink into familiar aromas of banana and clove, provided by a tremendous German yeast strain.”

Man I love a good hefeweizen and this is one of them. It’s banana and bubblegum with a little clove and cinnamon spice. Imagine drinking a banana cream smoothie sprinkled with a hint of cinnamon.
